Buddha belly, jelly belly, beer belly, spare tire, Shall I go on? OK! Rolly polly, muffin top, baby-santa, the mother ship – you get the point! BELLY FAT!!! I mean this is a heavy topic- no pun intended.
Some of us have gone under the knife, or wish we had a knife for all the skinny people we’ve seen. As you age and your metabolism slows down, the amount of fat in your body slowly increases. Women experience an even greater fat percentage increase than men do (lucky women right?).
Unfortunately, belly fat is not limited to the stuff out front that you can grab with your hand (subcutaneous fat) – but it’s the fat you can’t see that’s really a cause for concern (visceral fat). Visceral fat lies deeper inside the abdomen, surrounding the abdominal organs. Gaining this type of fat has been linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes breast cancer, gallbladder problems, high blood pressure, and other health problems.
Now its this “hidden fat” that’s more difficult but definitely worth getting rid of. Pot belly’s are a possible precursor for metabolic syndrome, or syndrome x. Visceral fat is also deadly because of its role in inflammation, a natural immune response that has been tied to almost every chronic disease there is.
Have I scared you enough? Well if this doesn’t apply to you, share this tip with someone and scare someone else! Diet and exercise is the best approach to this problem. And no you can’t crunch your fat away! So if you’re not in the gym or don’t have a personal trainer, get with it!
