Holy Sit! My back is killing me!!! And no wonder why⎯sitting has been the culprit behind many ailments including back pain. Normally people have to sit down when hearing bad news, but in this case, you might want to stand up. Besides the obvious neck, back, and knee pain; if you’re depressed, obese, or have high cholesterol you may be sitting too much. Short life spans are also an offspring of a sedentary lifestyle! If you wonder how sitting is connected to this stuff, read on…
Back Pain
Continued pressure on your spine may cause a disk to come out of place resulting in serious pain.
Shorter life span
Even if you exercise, sitting more than six hours a day increases the risk of early
death from all causes. For women risks go up 35%, and 18% for
men. Those who don’t exercise and sit all day are at a 94% higher risk of premature death for women, and a 48% higher risk for men.
Knee Pain
Sitting all day, for weeks on end puts pressure on the kneecap and can lead to pain and swelling .
Increased risk of heart disease
A workout after work isn’t enough to make up for sitting still all day. Those who work out and sit all day are just as likely to develop heart disease as those who don’t work out and sit all day. Sitting raises your blood sugar, and your cholesterol as well. Sitting causes enzyme activity in the body to drop by as much as 90%. This means less fat will be used for energy and also healthy cholesterol drops by 20%.
Obesity
Umm, this is no shocker. Not only aren’t you burning enough calories, you’re slowing your metabolism which contributes to weight gain.
Now while this sounds like even those who exercise are doomed because of long sitting bouts, it should. The point is for all executives and couch potatoes to get up and walk throughout the day in the office, or stand up and stretch. You know you’re too attached to your chair when you want to kill someone for sitting in it.
